Maintaining a comfortable and controlled recording environment is essential for a mobile production platform. To support long recording sessions while operating fully off-grid, we selected a 48V DC rooftop air conditioning system designed specifically for battery-based applications.

At Rolling Rock Music Express, we are building more than just a motorhome. We are building a fully mobile recording studio designed to travel across America, record musicians on the road, and operate comfortably off-grid for extended periods of time.
Because of that, choosing the right air conditioning system was extremely important to us.
After researching multiple options, we decided to install the OutEquip Pro Summit 2 48V rooftop air conditioner into our 1978 GMC Royale motorhome project.
Originally, our plan was to complete the installation alongside a dedicated 48V lithium battery system. However, while we were still finalizing battery decisions and working through delays and availability issues, we decided to move forward with real-world testing using what we already had available in the shop.
For testing purposes, we connected four fully charged 12V batteries in series to create a temporary 48V battery bank. Even with this temporary setup, the Summit 2 immediately impressed us.
The first thing we noticed was the soft ramp-up of the brushless motor system. Instead of the harsh startup shock common with many rooftop air conditioners, the Summit 2 gradually and smoothly increased power draw. This greatly reduced startup stress on the battery system and made the entire unit feel far more refined and energy efficient than expected.
Cooling performance was excellent right from the start.
Even while operating from a temporary battery setup with no active charging source connected initially, the unit continued running smoothly for an extended period before we later introduced solar charging into the system. Once solar support was added, the setup became even more impressive.
We also monitored system wiring, battery temperatures, and overall power draw during operation. Wire temperatures remained cool, startup loads stayed manageable, and the overall energy consumption was significantly lower than we originally anticipated for a rooftop RV air conditioner.
Another major advantage for us was the low-profile design of the Summit 2 system. Because our GMC Royale is being transformed into a mobile music and media platform, appearance and aerodynamics matter. The sleek profile of the unit integrates extremely well into the overall design of the vehicle while still delivering outstanding cooling performance.

The Summit 2 exceeded our expectations during initial testing, and we are excited to continue expanding the system with larger lithium battery banks, additional solar capacity, and long-term off-grid travel testing across the United States.

The selected climate control system works in conjunction with our phased power design. Phase 1 battery capacity supports intermittent cooling while operating on solar replenishment, while Phase 2 expansion increases available runtime for longer recording sessions and extended off-grid stays.
